ESPN: Barry Sanders' 1988 season has no equal

Today, there are more than 100 FBS teams with rosters that often broach around 100 players. In simplified math, the game has seen more than 500,000 players take the field over the past 50 years.

Future NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas left the program to a little-known junior who had rushed for just over 600 yards as a sophomore in 1987.

Over the next year, Sanders wrote his legacy every single week with the single greatest season of college football ever played. His 2,850 yards are more than even some of the best running backs log in a career. That NCAA record still stands, and it's one of 34 he set that season. Winning the Heisman Trophy that season is laughably far down the list of remarkable accomplishments for Sanders in a season to remember in Stillwater.

Barry Sanders Still Ranks Among The Best

Oklahoma State legend Barry Sanders ranks among the best to ever play the game. His 1988 season set the standard for greatness at the running back position and led to the schools first and only Heisman Trophy. Sanders, who is a member of the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame, still ranks as the top 2,000-yard rusher in a season nearly 25 years later.

Oklahoma State Returns for Summer

Many of the 2012 Oklahoma State Cowboys returned to campus today for the start of summer school. The Cowboys will hit the books over the next two months, while beginning an intense summer training program with strength coach Rob Glass that will prepare them for the upcoming season. OSU officially reports for fall camp on August 2 and opens the 2012 season on Sept. 1 at home against Savannah State. For those of us counting, that is 60 days until training camp. OSU returns a wealth of talent and the expectations are high after coming off a Big 12 title. The Cowboys are coming off one of their most competitive springs in the Mike Gundy era and look to continue the momentum this summer.
